Task - Monitor 9i

Teams of Helpers - Your Team Leader is the Coord Umpire. As well as reporting in to the Helper Coordinator at Monkton Boathouse, please report to your Team Leader when you arrive. If, later, you need help, please contact him or her first.

Task -

You work at the top of the long reach.

Please arrive in good time to reach your position. (see Map) You should position yourself on the apex of your bend so you have a good view up and downstream. You will probably have to walk there which could take half an hour. Please be in place in time to check the crews going to the start. On arrival at your location examine river for obstacles and report arrival to Safety Coordinator who is positioned at the railway bridge.

Chivvy crews up to start if necessary.

New advice this year: It is a great help to the starters and marshals above the start if crews arrive in the correct order. To help this to happen, the numbers of the boats which have launched from Saltford will be radioed to you in the order in which they launched, during the launching process. You should write these numbers in a list, and note when they pass you. in a brief radio message, broadcast to all officials, report if a boat passes your point way out of order, and also report when the last boat going up to the start passes your point.

The aim will be to launch boats in the correct order. Please help to maintain this order as crews proceed to the start. Monitors A, B, C, D should keep a close watch on the order in which Crews arrive and should ensure that they are in the correct order. The marshalling area of the start is going to be crowded, so if boats arrive there out of order it is very difficult to make corrections that stage.

If a small number of boats are late and may hold up the start, they may be held at Minerva until the rest of the division has raced past. Event control will be listening to the radio conversations and, in consultation with the starter will decide if crews should be held in this way.

Please note the rules of circulation. The movement of boats is complicated. Also note that crews boating from Minerva are allowed to warm up downstream of their club until the first boat arrives upstream from the Saltford end. As soon as this happens, the Minerva boats must be told to turn and move upstream, slotting in to their correct marshalling order.

There are some foreign crews which may not understand English!

Your main task is to monitor the safety of competitors and to summon help to cope with any emergency.

Give instructions to crews to avert a collision or accident and avoid interference. Stop a crew if necessary for safety reasons. Pass warnings to other officials.
