Monktonians rowing - Summer 2003  

[b] rowed in the England VIII in the Home Countries match which was held in Cork, Ireland. The crew came 2nd. More details later.

[b] represented Great Britain in the Nations Cup (Under 23). They were disappointed not to get a medal.

[b] and [b] (Coach Carl Purchase) competed in the Women's J15 Double Sculls at the National Championships, which were held in Glasgow, after a training camp in Nottingham. They came 2nd in the first round, which led to a repechage race in which they came 4th, just missing a place in the final.

[b] (Coach JMB) competed in the J16 Coxed Fours at the National Championships, after a training camp in Cambridge and Berwick-upon-Tweed. The training camp went well, as did the first 500 metres of the race. After that the crew was left behind by crews from Kingston Grammar School and Canford.

[b] is doing lots of sculling at York City RC

[b] and [b] (coach JMB) competed in four events at Stourport Regatta after a training camp at Monkton. They won the Senior Four Coxless Pairs, both wearing number 118. This was the only event won by current Monkton boys in 2003.

[b] competed (under Stratford upon Avon colours) at Ross Regatta where she sculled in the winning Women's J16 Coxless Quad crew. She also reached the final of Women's Novice Coxed Fours by winning four heats comfortably, but the crew had to withdraw before racing the final.

[b] competed in several regattas, coxing winning crews in Men's Senior C Fours, Men's Senior B Coxed Pairs, Men's Novice Fours, Mixed Senior C Fours and Mixed Novice Fours - all at Castledore Regatta, under Plymouth ARC colours.

[b] represented Great Britain in the World Championships, rowing bow in the Eight which won the bronze medal. This young crew has made excellent progress this year and have earned qualification to row in the Olympics in Athens.

[b] represented Great Britain in the World Championships, rowing bow in the Coxless Four which won the silver medal. Steve was World Champion in Coxed Fours in 2000, and was a member of the Olympic team in Sydney; he was World Champion in Coxless Fours in 2001. The crew missed the Gold medal by a few feet in 2002, and suffered the same result this year. They have qualified to row in the Olympics in Athens.

(All the GB team will go back into the selection melting pot after their holiday.)

[b] and [b] were spotted on crews at the Qualifying Race at Henley.; [b] has joined Cambridge '99 and is rowing regularly.; [b] has joined Molesey. [b] was featured on an article about international rowing in the [i] in June 2003; [b] and [b] have been rowing at Selwyn in a boat named after another Monktonian - [b].
